We are pleased to announce that the Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) has been selected as one of two hosts in Japan for the 2010 Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for Intensive Summer Institutes. This scholarship provides full funding for 30 students to participate in a summer intensive language program.
This is a highly competitive, nation-wide scholarship, so we encourage applications to be prepared to put time and careful consideration into the application process. The first step in this process is to thoroughly read the Application Instructions. Below is a list of highlights from the application instructions to help you get started and a check list of tips to keep in mind as you complete the application process.
NOTE: This guide is provided for students interested in JCMU, however, the SELECTION OF SCHOLARSHIP AWARDEES IS NOT CONDUCTED BY JCMU. There are two State Department-recognized instructional sites for CLS fellows in Japan - scholarship recipients may be placed in either Hikone or Kyoto.

* Have a friend, parent, advisor, or teacher proofread your essays. When in doubt, contact your university's writing or tutoring center.
* Make sure to complete ALL sections of the application fully. Incomplete applications will not be considered for funding.
* Review the entire application at least once before submitting it. Remember, you cannot go back to make changes once it has been submitted!
